Oriana Women’s Choir presents the Canadian première of love fail, contemporary American composer David Lang’s choral work for women’s voices. Composed shortly after completing his Pulitzer prizewinning the little match girl passion, Lang uses texts that he has gleaned from various translations of Tristan and Isolde and intersperses them with contemporary poetry by Lydia Davis, resulting in a stunning exploration of the complicated juxtaposition of beauty and pain in romantic love. Our presentation will feature Ceinwen Gobert, who has choreographed a solo dance for the work. Gobert is renowned for her dancing with Signal Theatre in the Luminato presentation of Bearing, and Soundstreams’ series concert Northern Encounters, who has choreographed a solo dance for the work.
love fail has been presented in Canada in the quartet version, by four singers from Pro Coro in Edmonton, but the choral version has not yet been performed in Canada and we are very much looking forward to introducing this work to Toronto audiences. The concert takes place one night only, on Saturday, February 23 at 8 pm, at Calvin Presbyterian Church, 26 Delisle Avenue in Toronto. Oriana Women’s Choir, led by artistic director Mitchell Pady, is an auditioned ensemble exploring the possibilities in choral music for the female voice. We collaborate with a wide range of artists to push the boundaries of what audiences might typically expect in repertoire and performance from a women’s choir while adhering to a high artistic standard. In recent years the choir has performed with female folk trio the O’Pears and Indo-funk ensemble Autorickshaw and appeared with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in their performance of Mahler’s Third Symphony. Oriana presents a three-concert series in Toronto annually and toured to Montreal and Newfoundland in 2018.
